This Nike ad is a promotion of the Euro cup of 2008, Wayne Rooney, a British soccer player is known for his brutish and bestial style of play. This ad is playing off of that, and it caught my eye because of the very savage nature of the picture. The background is white and is contrasting with a very saturated red. The red also contrasts Wayne Rooney’s skin, symbolizing the flag. This picture doesn’t follow the rule of thirds and has Wayne Rooney in the middle, but it has the Just Do It Nike logo in the bottom right, it attracts the viewer and is placed within the rules of thirds in a very appealing position. This is a very emotional add with very little going on. The shadows of black, in his mouth, hands and armpits amplify the distortion of colors. I like this add because it shows the raw emotion that is soccer. It is exciting and even stirs up emotions within the viewer. This ad says more in just the few seconds it takes to observe the facial expressions of Wayne Rooney that an entire paper on soccer fandom could illustrate.

Video Review; Youtube- My New Haircut: Asian Edition January 26, 2009

Hello and welcome to my Blog and its first entry, Video Review; YouTube- My New Haircut: Asian Edition. There are a couple key points I will be making in my amateur review of the Asian Edition of My New Hair Cut which was a couple kids trying to make a spoof of the YouTube video, My New Hair Cut- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JMOh-cul6M&NR=1. Both videos use stereotypical characteristics of certain ethnic groups and playfully mock themselves.
My New Haircut: Asian Edition plays through the evening of a young Asian man getting ready to party. He starts ranting about his new hair cut and how it will stimulate the ladies and get him laid. It is shot in various locations, each of which is used to transition various comedic lines and which plays off of the original. The bar is one of the key locations, where the protagonist is trying to get girls. It’s a bright lit backdrop that helps give an energetic vibe to the piece. He is supposed to be pumped up and a bar well lit and with active background helps accentuate the excitement. The two other locations are in a bathroom and in a gym. These location are very different visually, the bathroom is very dark in some parts of the video but well lit in others. The gym is very brightly lit. Both of these places are used for comedic purposes and are very funny.
There are numerous things that are very appealing about this video, its comedic tone, playful mockery of Chinese stereotypes and the derision of the previous My New Haircut. It is visually very appealing because of the different locations and the diverse lighting. Each location is humorous and plays well with the witty monologue. One of the funniest clips is when he starts saying “Saki bomb” and he’s on the toilet and reaches his hand underneath the stall to point to the camera. This was a funny and different attempt at shot of the man pointing to a camera.
What many people may not like and criticize about this video would be its ‘bleeping’ of the F’word and I would disagree and say that it adds to the playful comedic tone of the video. Bleeping out long sentences for a couple seconds can be funnier than most dialogues because it allows the listener to imagine it him/herself and possibly think of something unimaginable; a characteristic of many funny video clips. With that said, I would like to look at a few things that they could have changed.
There are very few things that could be mentioned in regards to helpful criticism. I am not aware of the exact intentions of the filmmakers but if I with them I would have mentioned to think twice about the scenes in the bathroom where the protagonist is darkened by the shadows. I would have changed the lighting of the bathroom scenes where his face isn’t very well lit. It could have been lit so that you could clearly see his face. There isn’t any mystery or sadness in the character and shadows are a good way to portray various emotions linked to unhappiness. A funny, happy and energized character shouldn’t have a shadowed face, it doesn’t mesh well with the comedic tone and image emitted from the protagonist and the video.
Overall I found this video to be very funny and entertaining. I highly recommend you take a look at it ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNfyBqrAaPk&feature=related) and even the previous Guido version of My New Haircut to see how the Asian Edition is mocking its predecessor. Thanks for catching up with me and my thoughts I will be back in the near future, good night.
